About Choke Canyon Reservoir State Park

Choke Canyon Reservoir State Park is situated in the Brush Country of south-central Texas, primarily in Live Oak and McMullen counties. Centered around the large Choke Canyon Reservoir, the park encompasses over 26,300 acres of rugged terrain featuring rolling hills, brushlands, and open water expanses. Historically, the reservoir was completed in 1982 to provide flood control, irrigation, and potable water for surrounding communities, and since then, the park has become a vital habitat and recreational resource in the region. The park’s semi-arid environment supports diverse wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, bobwhite quail, wild turkey, and numerous waterfowl, making it a popular birdwatching and hunting destination. Visitors can enjoy a wide array of outdoor activities including fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie; boating and kayaking on the reservoir; hiking and mountain biking along established trails; camping in several developed campgrounds; and wildlife photography. Notable landmarks include scenic overlooks of the reservoir, the secluded Davidson Creek Unit known for its serene hunting and hiking opportunities, and well-maintained boat ramps providing access to prime fishing spots. The park’s mixture of water-based recreation and upland habitat offers visitors an immersive outdoor experience, making it a favored getaway for both adventure seekers and nature lovers in Texas. The accessibility from nearby towns and moderate visitation levels ensure a balance of solitude and amenities throughout the year.
